Cyclist riding on a dedicated cycling track in Islamabad

If you’re picking up cycling in Islamabad for the first time, the good news is you don’t need to hunt for quiet backstreets to feel safe. The city has actually built out dedicated cycling infrastructure over the past few years — separated tracks, marked lanes, and a few genuinely well-loved routes that are easy on beginners. Here’s where to start.

Gomal Road Cycling Track, E-7

This is one of the more established dedicated tracks in the city — a roughly 700-meter stretch built along the main road in Sector E-7, separated from traffic so you’re not sharing space with cars. It’s short, flat, and low-pressure, which makes it a solid place to get comfortable on a bike before venturing onto busier roads.

Good for: first-time riders, evening rides, building confidence before longer routes

F-8 Park Cycling Track

Another dedicated track, this one runs through F-8 Park — one of several bicycle-lane locations that have been part of the city’s development plans, alongside spots like Constitution Avenue, Faisal Avenue, and Kachnar Park. It’s shaded, well-used, and close to F-8 Markaz, so it’s an easy one to pair with a coffee stop before or after.

Good for: casual morning rides, families, anyone easing into a routine

Margalla Road and Constitution Avenue

These two get mentioned together often because they were among the first roads in Islamabad to get dedicated cycling lanes. Margalla Road in particular has the advantage of scenery — you’re riding with the hills right there — while Constitution Avenue is wider and flatter, better if you want distance without much elevation.

Good for: slightly longer rides once you’ve got your basics down

F-9 Park Loop

F-9 Park has become one of the more popular spots for casual cycling, with bicycle lanes built as part of the city’s push to become more cycling-friendly, alongside efforts from local environmental groups advocating for the same. It’s a loop rather than a point-to-point route, which makes it easy to do as many or as few laps as you want without committing to a fixed distance.

Good for: flexible-length rides, riding solo, testing your stamina without going far from the start

Rawal Lake and Lake View Park

This one’s less about a dedicated track and more about the ride itself — Rawal Lake sits inside Margalla Hills National Park, with Lake View Park built alongside it on Murree Road as a recreational spot. It’s not the flattest route in the city, but it’s one of the most scenic, and there’s enough going on around the lake (food spots, rest points) that it doesn’t feel like just a ride — it feels like a destination.

Good for: weekend rides, anyone who wants the ride to double as a day out

F-8 Markaz to Japanese Park

This is one we run ourselves as a regular group ride — a relaxed route from F-8 Markaz out to Japanese Park. It’s flat, well-paved, and short enough that it doesn’t demand much prior fitness, which is part of why it works well as a first group ride for people who’ve never ridden with others before.

Good for: your first group ride, morning starts, riders who want company rather than a solo route

E-11 to Dera Dari

A longer, evening-friendly route out to Dera Dari Restaurant — good if you’ve done a few shorter rides already and want to push the distance a little. Rental bikes are available on this one specifically, so it’s also a fair pick if you’re not ready to buy a bike yet but want to see if the distance suits you.

Good for: riders past the absolute-beginner stage, evening rides, testing longer distances before committing to your own bike

A Few Tips Before You Start

  • Start with a dedicated track, not open road. Gomal Road and F-8 Park are the easiest entry points precisely because you’re not sharing space with traffic.
  • Ride in the morning or evening. Both for the weather and because these hours tend to have the most other cyclists around, which makes solo beginners feel less alone on the road.
  • Don’t feel like you need your own bike right away. A few routes, like the Dera Dari ride, have rental options — a good way to figure out if cycling’s actually for you before spending on gear.
  • Group rides are genuinely easier than riding alone. If you’re nervous about pacing, traffic, or just staying motivated, a guided group ride removes most of that decision-making for you.

Call-to-Action

If any of these routes sound worth trying, we run a few of them as regular group rides — including the F-8 to Japanese Park ride and the longer Dera Dari route. Rental bikes available if you’re not ready to buy your own yet.
